Interpretation simply means voice to voice translation from one language to another. There are 3 types of interpretations; Simultaneous, Consecutive and Whispering Interpretation:-

Simultaneous – The speaker speaks into a microphone and members of the audience listen to what is being said in their own language through headsets. The interpreters sit in sound-proof booths and listen to the proceedings through headphones whilst simultaneously repeating what is being said into a microphone for transmission to the delegates’ headsets.

Consecutive – The interpreter listens and then pauses while the consecutive interpreter repeats what has just been said in the target language. Consecutive interpreting works very well in small groups of people where there is only one foreign language to be catered for. A good example would be business meetings where most of the delegates are English but a French consecutive interpreter has been hired to help a French speaking delegate participate.

Whispering – Whispering Interpreting is where the interpreter sits or stands next to the person needing to understand the foreign language and whispers what’s being said in their ear. No special equipment is required and the interpreting is near real-time.

In Malaysia, a certified translation is a document that has been translated by a certified translator from the Institut Penterjemahan dan Buku Malaysia (ITBM) or the Malaysian Translator’s Association (MTA).

A certified translation is a translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting that the translation is accurate and complete to the best of the translator’s knowledge and ability. The certified translation should be obtained from an appointed translator from ITBM, MTA or Court to be made official as the translation requires a seal from the above institutions.

A Notarized Translation is a translation that has been carried out by a translator and notarized by a Notary Public. A Notary Public is a public officer constituted by law to serve the public in non-disputed matters usually concerned with estates, deeds, powers-of-attorney, and foreign and international business. The translator is required to sign a simple declaration which is called affidavit to the effect that the translation is a true representation of the original document.

A Certified Translation on the hand must be carried out by a professional certified translator. Certification involves translating the document and rubber stamping or embossing each page of the document with an official seal from ITBM or MTA.

Certified translations are required for various numbers of reasons. Some examples are as follows. Almost all legal paperwork will be required certified translation. For example court transcripts or evidences in another language will need to be translated and certified before being submitted. Documents like services agreements and birth or marriage certificates also need certification.

Any document that is not in English or Bahasa Malaysia that needs to submit to a government body will have to be translated. Documents that are needed for immigration purposes are always required to be translated. For example if you are applying for permanent residency or citizenship in a foreign country, it is most likely that the embassy of the country will require all your documentation to be translated into that country’s official language.
